HowTo: Geotag your photos with the Garmin Forerunner 405

For running, I use a Garmin Forerunner 405. Besides using the watch for sport, I show how you can “geotag your photos”. Geotaging means that you add in the meta information of your pictures the geographic position where you have taken the photo.

How does it work? The GPS track information is compared with the time when your photo as been shot. The X and Y coordinates are stored in the EXIF meta information.

Cookbook:

Preparation: Take your Garmin Forerunner 405 and your digital camera. Take care, that the time of the camera is synchronized with your Garmin watch.
Start your hike. Important: Before you start you have to start the stopwatch (In the training mode). The stopwatch has to run the whole hike; otherwise it doesn’t record your trip.
Back home, you have to transfer the track to your computer: Plug your “ANT-stick” to transfer the data to your Training-Center or the GarminConnect application.
Once the data is imported in your application, you have to export the track to a tcx file.
Convert the tcx file to a gpx file, use:

Use gpicsync to add the geoposition to your picture
Start the application.
Choose your picture folder.
Choose the gpx file.
Start the process (Press “synchronise”).

As a result you have your picture enriched with geographical information and you have a kml file with thumbnails of your pictures along your track.

You can use the kml file with Google maps or Google Earth:

Outdoor GPS: Garmin Colorado 300

A month ago I bought a new gps outdoor unit. The cool thing is that now all the topographical maps from Switzerland are available on can be stored on the unit (1:25'000 - 1:50'000) .

My opinion after having used it several times for hiking: It would be unwise to leave your traditional map at home, but after some hours, it is a useful tool to guide you.

Romantic Igloo Night in Gstaad (Eggli)

Between Christmas and new year we slept one night in an igloo. It was an amazing experience: aperitif with a beautiful view over the swiss alps, relaxing in the sauna, a tasty swiss cheese fondue, an exciting sledge ride an finally a romantic night in a warm double-sleeping bag, surrounded with candle light and coats.

Last Friday, I played with a 100-Dollar-Laptop from the OLPC project.

I was most impressed how the display was even readable in the bright sunlight and about the mesh network concept.
I hope Swiss people (even big children) will able to buy this cool gadget as well ;-).

Domincia and Antigua: Paradise on earth :-)

This summer holidays we went for the first time to the Caribbean.

The first week we spend on the green island Dominica in the Hotel Tamarind Tree. We made on this beautiful island a lot of interesting trips: Whale Watching, Hiking to a boiling lake, snorkeling, visiting and swimming in waterfalls.

The second week we relaxed on a white sand beach at the Cocos Hotel in Antigua. Most of the time we just enjoyed the sea and the beach. In St. Johns we saw the opening day parade of the carnival.
